Beating the World Cup Gridlock
This is a late post, I should have written this earlier. But I was lazy and watching the FIFA World Cup instead. So what are we talking about today? The FIFA World Cup. If you didn’t know already, it is taking place in North America and being hosted in 2 locations in Mexico, 3 locations in Canada, and and 11 places in the United States! Unfortunately, D.C. isn’t one of them. But regardless Washington, D.C. is stepping up with a massive “Freedom 250” Fan Zone right on the National Mall. Again, if you didn’t know, it’s there now and will be there until July 19. The space between 3rd and 4th Streets has been transformed into a giant watch party with massive screens, interactive exhibits, and thousands of cheering fans.
It is going to be an absolutely incredible atmosphere. However, you know what that means, a complete nightmare for traffic and parking. With major road closures planned around the White House and the National Mall, trying to drive into the city will leave you staring at the brake lights instead of the soccer match. My wife was at the light getting on the 9th Street Expressway for 30 minutes just trying to get home… Let’s make smart and fast decisions, while trying to enjoy the most along the way to get to the World Cup. So what does that mean? To ride your e-bike!
The Best Bike Routes into the District
Whether you are a seasoned commuter or a tourist looking for a scenic detour, Northern Virginia offers some of the best dedicated bike trails that lead straight into the heart of D.C. I know not everyone thinks so, but it beats the hell out of driving into the National Mall during traffic! Riding your e-bike allows you to bypass the gridlock and enjoy the beautiful summer weather. Please, just please, make sure to avoid breaking the law and also, be kind to your neighbors. Seriously, don’t drive so fast, allow yourself to pass gracefully if needed, saying “on your left” goes a long way.
If you are coming from out west, either from Reston, Herndon, or Vienna, the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail is your best friend, and the one I usually take. I enjoy the views, some people say that it isn’t great especially the further out you are, but I disagree. Just make sure you have some sunscreen and I personally like going under the short tunnels. You can cruise along the W&OD, connect to the Custis Trail in Arlington, and cross the Key Bridge right into D.C. It is a straight shot that keeps you away from major highways.
For those traveling from Alexandria or South Arlington, the Mount Vernon Trail is unbeatable. The path runs right along the Potomac River, offering incredible views of the D.C. skyline. This trail has a certain way of making you feel like you’re a part of the city, maybe it’s just me. You can take the Mount Vernon Trail up to the 14th Street Bridge or the Memorial Bridge, dropping you right at the doorstep of the National Mall and the Fan Zone.
Where to Park Your E-Bike Safely
Once you reach the National Mall, you need a safe place to lock up before grabbing some food and finding a spot in front of the big screens. Do not try to bring your bike directly into the densest crowds of the Fan Zone.
Instead, look for designated bike racks slightly outside the immediate event perimeter. Great options include the racks near the Jefferson Memorial or around the Smithsonian Castle. Capital Bikeshare also has numerous docking stations around the Mall, and many of these areas have sturdy public racks nearby.
Crucial Tip: Try to use a heavy-duty U-Lock combined with a cable for your wheels. But most importantly, stop just locking your wheels! Especially your front wheel where you may or may not have a quick disconnect! Always lock your frame and if you can, have a second lock or a long tether to lock your wheels AND your frame together. Never rely solely on a cheap cable lock, especially during a massive public event. All locks do is buy you some time, every lock in the world is breakable.
Post-Match Plans
After the match ends, you are already on your bike and ready to explore! I believe there are food vendors at the Fan Zone events and there should be plenty of food trucks along Constitution on the weekends. The great news is you don’t have to wait in line for a crowded Metro train when you’re ready to go home. You can easily roll over to The Wharf to grab a drink, head into Penn Quarter for dinner, or simply enjoy a breezy evening ride back across the river.
